The student’s « Saint-Nicolas celebration »

The student’s « Saint-Nicolas celebration » is a tradition that has it’s origin form the beginning of the century.

It is celebrated by the students living in Liège on the first Tuesday of December. It’s the most massive guindaille! A crowd of students with white aprons invaded the street of the city at dawn, tankard in the hands, to beg some coins, for “the work of thirst”. In the afternoon, the processions gather at the “20 Août” square where the podium is drawn up. And the festival continues with great reinforcement of decibels and spots of light. In general, the teachers suspend the courses on this occasion. In fact, they haven’t any choice…. The festival opens really on Monday evening by a great evening under the big top that gathers more than 3000 students. In the same time thousands of students form Liège and form other places come and invade the streets of Liège and particularly “the Carré”, the district of the cafés, well known among the students and every roisterer of the ardent City.
